It’s a bird; It’s a plane! No – it’s a Manimal? Actually folks, MANIMAL is the title of a band new NBC movie of the week, staring – of course, SIMON!
Simon plays Jonathan Chase, a professor of animal behaviorisms, who, with the help of his partner (Glynn Turman) and a lady police officer, (Melody “Flash Gordon” Anderson) fights crime in New York City. Equipped with mystic powers inherited from his father, which include exceptional hearing and eyesight, Jonathan is also able to change into animals at will, and uses this to his advantage.
Merely transforming into a wide variety of animals from a black leopard to a high flying hawk should pose no problem to British star Simon MacCorkindale, who stars as Jonathan Chase in the 20th Century-Fox Television series, “Manimal.”

Simon MacCorkindale breezed into the London hotel where we’d arranged to meet. He was dressed in a navy blazer, open-neck shirt and pale blue trousers, apparently oblivious to the cold and rain outside.
Since his award-winning performances in the films Death on the Nile and The Riddle of the Sands, 29-year-old Simon MacCorkindale has spent much time commuting between the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. In fact for his Festival engagement today he has flown in especially from Los Angeles, where he is currently filming in Sword and Sorcerer. The visit marks a brief but welcome return home for the Ely-born actor, whose father, former RAF Group Captain Peter MacCorkindale, is now a social services administrator for Pye and Philips of Cambridge. In his career, Simon continues to enjoy the nomadic existence that was a feature of his childhood. Death on the Nile was filmed in Egypt; The Riddle of the Sands took him to Holland and Germany; Capo Blanco, in which he co-stars with Charles Bronson, was made in Mexico, and he has recently completed four months location work in Dublin, starring as Lieutenant David Clement of the Royal Hussars in The Manions of America, made for EMI-TV by ABC. This sweeping saga spanning two parallel love stories during the 20 years from 1847 will be screened as a six-hour mini-series.
Meet the good looking actor who’s found a style to suit him Simon MacCorkindale seems set to prove that you can’t judge a book by its cover. One glance at the debonair six footer might suggest that he earns his living wheeling and dealing at the Stock Exchange, commanding a battalion, or doing something important in banking. But Mr MacCorkindale who has a clutch of challenging roles under his (smart leather) belt that many an actor would be proud of is proof that, these days, you simply can’t go by appearances alone. In fact, Simon did almost follow in family footsteps and go into the Army. For generations, MacCorkindale’s have automatically gone into the Army and indeed, much of Simon’s childhood was spent travelling the world with his parents, moving from posting to posting.
Simon MacCorkindale made an impressive entry into major film roles with two highly contrasting parts: the smooth, sybaritic Simon Doyle in the 1930’s-set Agatha Christie murder mystery Death on the Nile, and the rough sailor hero, Arthur Davies, in the Edwardian spy thriller The Riddle of the Sands. His performances in both films brought him the Most Promising Actor Award in the 1979 Evening News British Film Awards. He has since co-starred with Sir John Mills in Thames TV’s four-part serialisation of Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass, playing the single-minded radio astronomer Joe Kapp, and in the film adaptation, Quatermass Conclusion. Now he has completed work on another leading film role, Lewis Clarkson, an M15 agent in post-World War II Peru, in the forthcoming Charles Bronson epic Cabo Blanco.
If a new vogue should develop for the kind of swashbuckling movie that brought Errol Flynn to fame, nobody would be more delighted than Simon MacCorkindale. This handsome British actor, who has made his presence felt in Death On The Nile and Riddle of The Sands, consolidates his strength in the television’s Quatermass and the adventure epic Cabo Blanco.

Simon MacCorkindale admitted cheerfully that he quite like Arthur Davies, the character he plays in his new film, The Riddle Of The Sands. In the film, Simon shares the honours with Michael York and Jenny Agutter and the result is a stylish thriller set in 1901, in which two splendid, young Englishmen manage to foil a dastardly German plot for the invasion of Britain.

When, for instance, Bette Davis turns up much earlier than her call, I reckon that’s the way to behave. I’m sure I learned a lot through osmosis; perhaps in years to come I might re-create a Ustinov-ism or a Bette Davis-ism without realising it.” Death On The Nile marks Simon’s major film debut. He’s since made The Riddle Of The Sands with Michael York.
His role as Simon Doyle in the Agatha Christie’s thriller Death On The Nile has put Simon MacCorkindale on his way to international stardom. He followed this movie with another starring role, opposite Michael York an Jenny Agutter in a thriller spy film, The Riddle Of The Sands. It is set in 1901 and is about two young Englishmen on a sailing holiday off the North-West coast of Germany who discover the Germans are planning an invasion of Britain. They try to investigate and become in plots and counter-plots of German espionage.

And he should know, having just finished filming Agatha Christie’s Death On The Nile with stars of such calibre as Peter Ustinov, David Niven and, of course, Miss Davis.
Simon MacCorkindale, 26, provides Jenny’s romantic interest in The Riddle Of The Sands. In real-life, he is married to talented young actress Fiona Fullerton.
“It’s a super part for me,” Simon exclaimed. “I had just finished my role in Death On The Nile when this film came along. Jenny and I were sent on a crash course to Cowes to learn all we could about sailing to make us look convincing on the screen.
“I had wanted to be an actor since I was about ten or eleven years old. My family had nothing to do with acting, and I first sprang it on them when I was about sixteen. Fiona’s father is an Army Colonel, and my father is a Squadron-Leader, so we both shared a Services background. We didn’t meet through our families, but indirectly through our work. The discipline is very similar in both professions. I wouldn’t have minded a career in the Services, but acting just happened to appeal to me more.”
After his role in the star-studded Death On the Nile, Simon MacCorkindale, twenty-six, gets his biggest solo break as Arthur Davies. “He is a fascinating character to play,” he says. “He’s a meek gentleman on land, but as soon as he gets afloat he becomes strong and confident as a brilliant sailor. I enjoyed it all enormously, but felt a bit panicky at times since there was so much to be learnt about sailing in such a short time. There was no way I could learn in a week what Davies had learned over several years. I had only done a very little sailing previously, but by the end of filming aboard the ‘Dulcibella’ I was a much more experienced sailor!
Simon MacCorkindale must be one of the few actors who have turned to Charles Bronson with the words: “Oh, you great butch creature, you!” and lived to tell the tale. As it was, Charlie, laughed and appreciated the joke from the young Englishman who was recently awarded the ‘Evening News’ most promising newcomer accolade for his work on ‘Death On The Nile’ and ‘Riddle Of The Sands’.
A few months a ago, Simon MacCorkindale, 27, was voted the most promising new comer for his performances in Death On The Nile and Riddle Of The Sands. The success clearly thrilled him but left him pondering on how to keep on top
“Talent is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve been very lucky and had a lot of breaks, but I still feel it’s no harder to be a success than to be a failure because there are no rules for finding success. You have to make them yourself and be rational. And then you find remaining there is almost harder than getting there.”
